The Power of Goal Mapping 30 Years on

You can’t help but be inspired when you sit down to talk to Brian Mayne. Brian’s personal development journey began after a host of setbacks left him in debt, homeless, and with a failed marriage. Having left school without qualifications, he wasn’t sure what to do. He says ‘it was a dark time in my life.’

He joined a direct sales organisation, where he met someone who taught him about the principles of success. Brian applied these principles to his life, and they became a turning point. He discovered the importance of goal setting and marvelled that it wasn’t a standard part of the school curriculum, as he describes it as ‘one of the most vital life skills.’

This realisation led him on a quest to find the best way to set goals. After studying with leading trainers like Stephen Covey, Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn, and Zig Ziglar, Brian had a flash of insight. Driving through central London at midnight, he saw a complete system, which he called “Goal Mapping”. He intuitively understood that powerful goal setting requires a combination of words to engage the logical mind and images to stimulate the creative mind. This use of both written words and pictures, affirmation and visualisation is the hallmark of the Goal Mapping system and what makes it unique.

The Seven Steps to Success

The Goal Mapping system is made up of seven steps that Brian reverse-engineered from his initial inspiration. The process guides you through a series of questions to capture your goals in a map of words and pictures, which activates both the logical and creative sides of the brain.

The seven steps are:

  1. Dream: Visualise your desired future success, whether in your life, career, or a specific area.
  2. Order: Use your logical brain to prioritise the main goal that, once achieved, will help you accomplish other goals.
  3. Map: Create the goal map itself, using both words and pictures. The main goal goes in the centre with other goals branching out from it.
  4. Why: Get clear on your strongest emotional reasons for wanting to achieve the goal; emotional motivation is more powerful than logical reasons.
  5. When choose a start date and target date for the achievement of the main goal
  6. How: Create a simple action plan of the actions and activity needed.
  7. Who: Determine who can help you achieve your goals and who you will need to be.

Review: Look at your map regularly to reinforce the brain connections and turn your casual thoughts into a firm belief.

The Neuroscience Behind Goal Mapping

Goal Mapping works by stimulating neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to rewire itself and form new connections. When you use words and pictures to set goals, you activate both sides of your brain, which creates new neural connections. The most crucial part of this process is the review, as repeatedly reviewing the goal causes these brain cells to repeatedly fire and, over time, wire together. As these connections strengthen, a thought about a goal evolves into a belief, which then acts as a constant command to your subconscious mind to motivate you toward its achievement.

Brian recommends reviewing your goal map every day, with the best time being first thing in the morning. In the morning, your brain is in an Alpha rhythm, a state similar to hypnosis or meditation, which provides the greatest connection to your subconscious mind. This allows your goals to have a deep impact on your subconscious, bypassing the conscious mind’s tendency to criticise and dismiss large goals. Getting the goal registered with your subconscious is key, as it acts as your “personal autopilot,” helping you notice opportunities and giving you the power to take the necessary actions.

For the past seven years, Brian has encouraged people to create their maps online instead of on paper. This is because it makes it easier to update your map and use personal pictures, which creates a more powerful brain cell connection. Brian says that the online format, which makes it easier to review your goals daily, has led to significantly greater results.

Incredible Results and Widespread Impact

Over the past 30 years, Goal Mapping has helped people achieve remarkable results in many areas of their lives. Brian frequently hears from people who, after years of setting a goal map and putting it away, rediscovered it and found that all their goals had come true. How much quicker would they have achieved their goals if they had reviewed the map regularly?  We will never know.

The system has helped people achieve health goals, such as significant weight loss and reversing Type 2 diabetes. It has also been used by individuals to overcome brain injuries, as the system helps to stimulate new brain cell connections in damaged areas. One of Brian’s trainers, who had a stroke that left him unable to walk, used Goal Mapping to stimulate his brain to rewire itself, and he has now learned to walk again and even leads mountain walking groups. His next goal is to learn to ski again.  The system has also helped people who have lost their ability to speak due to a stroke to regain their words.

Goal Mapping is also used in retirement homes to help elderly people set simple goals, which can help prevent the early onset of dementia. The system’s reach extends to top-tier athletes, including a three-time world champion kickboxer and bronze and silver medal-winning sculptors, as well as major corporations like Microsoft, Siemens, and Disney. Additionally, it has been used by more than a million children in over 30 countries to help them achieve greater grades and aim for higher education.

Brian emphasises that Goal Mapping is not a magic wand. Instead, it’s a tool that helps people get clear on what they want and what they need to do to achieve it. This clarity sends a powerful command to their subconscious mind, helping them to be their best.

Today there over 1,600 Goal Mapping coaches globally leaving no doubt that Brian is the embodiment of turning adversity into success.

Congratulations Brian on 30 years of changing lives.
